From Prairie V illage\, Kansas\, now living in Little Rock\, Dr. Alex Vernon graduated f rom the U.S. Military Academy at West Point (the only literature major in his class of over a thousand)\, served in combat as a tank platoon leader in the Persian Gulf War\, and earned a PhD from the University of North Ca rolina-Chapel Hill. He received an Army Historical Foundation Distinguishe d Writing Award and a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship\, a nd he is the M.E. &\; Ima Graves Peace Distinguished Professor of Engli sh at Hendrix College in Conway. He has written eleven books.
