Thomas Merton was an American Trappist mon k\, writer\, theologian\, mystic\, poet\, social activist and scholar. He is the author of more than 50 books but is probably most known for his bes tselling autobiography The Seven Story Mountain.

He was a pro ponent of interfaith dialogue and understanding and was behind the dialogu e with prominent Asian spiritual figures including the Dalai Lama.
