How do you hook the reader\, set the pace\ , and establish the foundations of a story quickly? In this generative cla ss\, we'll talk about the origins of good stories and how to take an idea from inspiration to the page. This class is open to beginning through adva nced writers\, and all participants will leave with a handful of new origi nal story starts.
\nAbout the presenter: Kirsten Sundberg Lu nstrum is the author of the novel Elita (published by TriQuarterl y Press/Northwestern University Press in January\, 2025) and the story col lection Outer Stars\, which won the 2025 Katherine Anne Porter Prize in Sh ort Fiction (UNT Press) and will be published in November of 2025. Her thr ee previous collections of short fiction are What We Do with the Wreckage\ , which won the 2017 Flannery O&rsquo\;Connor Award for Short Fiction (Uni versity of Georgia Press in 2018)\; Swimming with Strangers (Chronicle Boo ks\, 2008)\; and This Life She&rsquo\;s Chosen (Chronicle Books\, 2005). K irsten&rsquo\;s short fiction has been honored with a PEN/O. Henry Prize\, and her stories have appeared widely in journals\, among them The Sun\, P rairie Schooner\, Ploughshares\, One Story\, and McSweeney&rsquo\;s. She h as held fellowships from MacDowell\, Sewanee\, the Jack Straw Writers Prog ram\, and the Willa Cather Foundation. Kirsten is a member of the English Department faculty at Seattle&rsquo\;s The Bush School.
