Dr. Jonathan Reynolds of the NKU History and Geography Department returns for the 13th Annual City Barbecue Food f or Thought series to discuss republican liberalism. The 20th Century was a good time for democracy. Over the course of only 100 years\, the world tr ansitioned from being dominated by empires and monarchies to a near-univer sal embrace of liberal democracy. However\, it is important to note that i n the late 18th Century\, the ideas upon which the United States Constitut ion and American Nation would be founded were far from popular. In particu lar\, the ruling class of Europe largely viewed the idea of liberal republ ican democracy as a radical and dangerous concept that would inevitably re sult in conflict and chaos. This talk will focus on why European rulers sa w democracy as such a threat\, and also examine how a small group of philo sopher-radicals came to re-imagine human nature and lay the intellectual f oundations for the American Republican Democracy.

Dr. Reynolds h as taught at Bayero University\, Nigeria\, the University of Tennessee and Livingstone College in North Carolina (where he received the Aggrey Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1998). He began teaching at Northern Kentuc ky University in 1999\, where he has received the Outstanding Junior Facul ty\, Excellence in Sustained Research\, the Alumni Association Strongest I nfluence and the Milburn Outstanding Professor Awards. In 2018\, he was na med an NKU Regents Professor. He teaches courses on African\, World\, Tech nological\, Imperial\, Development\, Food History and Historical Methodolo gy.
\nReynolds has published in various journals\, including the International Journal of African Historical Studies\, History Co
mpass\, Historically Speaking\, the Journal of Asian and
African Studies and World History Connected. With Erik Gilb
ert\, he has published Africa in World History and Trading Ta
stes: Commodity and Cultural Exchange to 1750. By himself\, he has pu
