 p>\n<p><em>THE EXTERMINATING ANGEL</em></p>\n<p>A group of high-society fr
 iends are invited to a mansion for dinner and find themselves inexplicably
  unable to leave\, in Luis Bu&ntilde\;uel&rsquo\;s daring masterpiece The 
 Exterminating Angel (El &aacute\;ngel exterminador). Made just one year af
 ter the director&rsquo\;s inter&shy\;na&shy\;tional sensation Viridiana\, 
 this film\, full of eerie comic absurdity\, continues Bu&ntilde\;uel&rsquo
 \;s wicked takedown of the rituals and dependencies of the frivolous upper
  classes.</p>\n<p><em>GHOSTS BEFORE BREAKFAST</em></p>\n<p>A dadaist short
  in which Richter takes &ldquo\;everyday objects&rdquo\; and makes them re
 bel against their daily routine.</p>\n<hr />\n<p><strong>About the Film Co
 llection</strong></p>\n<p>The 16mm film collection has been part of the Li
 brary's holdings for over 55 years. It began in the 1960s\, and its first 
 films were part of the City of Miami's public library before there was a c
 ounty library. When MDPLS was formed\, the County supplemented its local f
 unding for films with Federal LSCA (Library Services and Construction Act)
  grants. Apart from leased feature films\, all films were purchased for fr
 ee exhibition for the life of the print. Subjects within the collection in
 clude experimental/avant-garde art films\, non-narrated films\, children's
  films\, Black history\, Floridiana\, and local history. Today\, there are
  over 4\,000 films within the collection.</p>\n<hr />\n<p><strong>About th

 ade Public Library System's Division of Special Collections &amp\; Archive
 s holds rare and irreplaceable historical documents for the benefit of the
  public and scholarly community. They oversee the Helen Muir Florida Colle
 ction\, 16mm Film Collection\, Cuban Collection of Rare Books &amp\; Ephem
 era\, Genealogy Collection\, Vasari Project\, and rare &amp\; antiquarian 
 books from as early as the 17th century. The Division's primary goal is to
  provide the public with the contents of the vault at their request. Its c
 ollections include rare books\, original manuscripts\, over 18\,000 photog
 raphs\, prints\, artifacts\, audiovisual resources\, and electronic media.
