X-ALT-DESC;FMTTYPE=text/html:<p>Falade's tensely wrought first novel exami
nes the role of Black soldiers in the Civil War and is a masterful depicti
on of the precarious nature of Black life during the war. In autumn 1863\,
thousands of formerly enslaved men joined the ranks of the Union Army and
many joined the African Brigade. The moral center and relentless question
er at the heart of this narrative\, Richard Etheridge must face down compl
ex feelings about his past and present as the child of the master and a sl
ave. A triumphant examination of U.S. history and race relations at a cruc
ial juncture\, as seen through the eyes of the well-wrought\, ever-questin
 g Etheridge\; highly recommended.</p>\n<p></p>\n<p><a href="https://sjcpl.
