The Purple Heart medal originated as Gener al George Washington's "Badge of Military Merit" in 1782 to recognize acts of bravery\, but it fell out of use until 1932\, when it was reinstated a s the Purple Heart medal to commemorate soldiers who were wounded or kille d in action. This lecture will review the history of this award and provid e an overview of "Purple Hearts Reunited"\, the organization that invites genealogists to volunteer their time and expertise to find living descenda nts of lost or wayward medals.
