\nOver the course of three presentations\, Rebecca Lippman establishes groundwork for embrac ing the fact that scholarships exist for everyone\, regardless of academic merit or personal background. Without a good strategy\, however\, these s cholarships feel difficult to find. Employing strategies that she has deve loped over the past decade as an instructor\, Becca walks participants thr ough a routine of practices used to identify\, apply for\, and manage scho larships. These interactive tools and sequenced action items enable studen ts to succeed in their customized searches for community-based scholarship s\, subsequently reducing the cost of higher education.
\nSe ssion 1: The Complex Landscape of Scholarships for College
\n< p>Before you dive into the many scholarship books\, YouTube tutorials\, an d spam-heavy databases that are out there\, attend this introduction to th e contemporary scholarship landscape. In this presentation\, Becca demysti fies the complex network and application processes related to scholarships for college and prepares you for the tuition ahead. Attendees learn why m erit and community-based scholarships are so hard to navigate\, how to app roach the scholarship search process\, and what the realistic timeline loo ks like if you or your student plans Fall enrollment.\nSess ion 2: Finding Scholarships that Fit
\nOrienting participan ts around unique aspects of themselves as individuals\, students\, and com munity members\, Becca walks participants through the development of 10-25 customized search terms. Demonstrating the complications of personal bias and online search processes with audience-based queries\, Becca teaches t he &ldquo\;5-click strategy&rdquo\; of digging through identified websites with intention. Participants leave this interactive workshop with a categ orized list of search terms for themselves\, a 3-step process for online s earches\, and a better sense of how public institutions\, private donors\, and large organizations advertise scholarship opportunities.
\nGiven the sheer number of scholarship opportunities out there\, it might seem like a heav y lift to craft multiple stories for multiple competitions. Join this inte ractive workshop and learn how to develop a series of interchangeable writ ten &ldquo\;modules&rdquo\; that can be used to address the most popular a spects of multiple scholarship essay prompts. Participants learn to analyz e and identify up to 3 typical varieties of the scholarship essay and walk away with a clear sense of the most relevant content\, details\, and fact s that must be incorporated into strong application materials.
\nRebecca Lippman brings a decad e of experience as a UCLA instructor and advisor at the Center for Scholar ships and Scholarly Enrichment\, where she coached undergraduate students through the process of identifying\, applying for\, and managing scholarsh ips.
