What is a (water) wave? Do you know how ma ny types of waves one can find in the ocean? During this presentation we w ill explore the different types of waves we observe in the water\, how the y are formed\, their relevance in our everyday life\, and how we study the m. From tsunamis and hurricane waves\, to sneaker waves and astronomical t ides\, we will talk about the history\, science and engineering behind wav es\, demystifying their impact while increasing the awareness of their rel evance and power.

Pedro Lomonaco\, PhD.\, is the Director of the Hinsdale Wave Research Laboratory at Oregon State Universi ty as well as Associate Professor of Coastal Engineering and Coastal Infra structures for the School of Civil and Construction Engineering at Oregon State university. Dr. Lomonaco received a B.Sc. in civil engineering from the National University of Mexico in 1991\, a M.Sc. in coastal engineering from the International Institute of Hydraulic and Environmental Engineeri ng &ndash\; IHE Delft\, The Netherlands in 1994\, and a Ph.D. in civil eng ineering from the University of Cantabria\, Spain in 1999. His professiona l and scientific activity primarily deals with studies of physical and num erical modelling of wave generation and propagation\, wave-structure inter action\, stability of coastal and submarine structures\, behavior of float ing structures\, characterization of wave energy converters\, offshore win d technology\, hydrodynamics\, scour protection\, and non-linear behavior of long-waves in shallow waters.
