What is a (water) wave? Do you know how ma ny types of waves one can find in the ocean? During this presentation we w ill explore the different types of waves we observe in the water\, how the y are formed\, their relevance in our everyday life\, and how we study the m. From tsunamis and hurricane waves\, to sneaker waves and astronomical t ides\, we will talk about the history\, science and engineering behind wav es\, demystifying their impact while increasing the awareness of their rel evance and power.

Pedro Lomonaco\, PhD.\, is the Director of the Hinsdale Wave Research Laboratory at Oregon State U niversity as well as Associate Professor of Coastal Engineering and Coasta l Infrastructures for the School of Civil and Construction Engineering at Oregon State university. Dr. Lomonaco received a B.Sc. in civil engineerin g from the National University of Mexico in 1991\, a M.Sc. in coastal engi neering from the International Institute of Hydraulic and Environmental En gineering &ndash\; IHE Delft\, The Netherlands in 1994\, and a Ph.D. in ci vil engineering from the University of Cantabria\, Spain in 1999. His prof essional and scientific activity primarily deals with studies of physical and numerical modelling of wave generation and propagation\, wave-structur e interaction\, stability of coastal and submarine structures\, behavior o f floating structures\, characterization of wave energy converters\, offsh ore wind technology\, hydrodynamics\, scour protection\, and non-linear be havior of long-waves in shallow waters.
