X-ALT-DESC;FMTTYPE=text/html:<p>The name of the nation of Zimbabwe transla
tes to &ldquo\;house of stone\,&rdquo\; giving a clue to the deep roots of
the modern Shona sculpture movement\, which began in the 1950s. More than
a thousand years ago\, the historic Shona people created a thriving civil
ization in Zimbabwe&rsquo\;s rocky plateaus. These people are revered by a
rchaeologists for their sophisticated stone artwork as well as utilitarian
  stone artifacts.</p>\n<p>&nbsp\;</p>\n<p>Contemporary artists in Zimbabwe
have revived this rich tradition of stone carving and advanced it into th
e 20th and 21st centuries\, carving rarer and more difficult stones into s
culptures inspired by their cultural heritage and their personal experienc
es. The stunning sculptures on display in this exhibit range from realism
to abstraction. View 15 masterful pieces by 5 renown sculptors\, including
  Godfrey Matungamidze\, Ishmael Kapeta\, James Tandi\, and Brian Watyoka.<
/p>\n<p>&nbsp\;</p>\n<p>The exhibition is curated from the AARLCC Special
Collections. Although many of AARLCC&rsquo\;s Zimbabwean pieces on are on
permanent display\, several of the pieces featured in &ldquo\;House of Sto
ne&rdquo\; will be exhibited to the public for the first time.</p>\n<p>&nb
