X-ALT-DESC;FMTTYPE=text/html:<p>Join us for an evening with John Tippett\,
assistant chief with the North Beach Volunteer Fire Department (NBVFD)\,
as he delivers a fascinating look into the 100-year history of the NBVFD t
hrough the department&rsquo\;s ten decades of service. The department serv
ing our community today was chartered by a group of concerned citizens on
August 4\, 1926. The run up to that historical date\, and the ensuing 100
 years\, are a microcosm of the American story.<br />&nbsp\;<br />John star
ted his research three years ago while looking at old newspaper stories fo
r a small picture book project. This then ballooned into a treasure trove
as he learned from community members that the story of the NBVFD is an int
egral part of the evolution of the Twin Beaches area\, Calvert County and
lower Anne Arundel County. The small picture book project expanded to a mo
re detailed story of the NBVFD that is expected to be available by the cen
 tennial.<br />&nbsp\;<br />John Tippett is a fifty-year veteran of the fir
e service who has been fortunate enough to live out his life&rsquo\;s drea
 m. He spent 35 years in the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue System\, sta
rting as a high school cadet and retiring as a safety battalion chief. He
was also the leader of Maryland Task Force 1\, a FEMA urban search and res
cue team that responded to the Pentagon on September 11th\, to Hurricane K
atrina and other disasters. In 2008\, he became the first deputy chief of
operations for the Charleston Fire Department in South Carolina. After ser
ving a year as interim chief\, John moved to North Beach in 2018 for a pos
ition with the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation as its director of
fire service programs. John retired from that position in 2025&nbsp\;and n
ow enjoys serving the community as a NBVFD member.</p>\n<p>Calvert Library
