Born and raised in Brooklyn\, New York\, M ichael Mitchell has been behind the drums since the age of 8. Michael bega n studying with NYC session-drummers Mike Mechem and Geoff Clapp\, and wit h their help\, started playing professionally at the age of 13\, in and ar ound the New York City area. After earning a Bachelor's degree in performa nce from the Manhattan School of Music\, a transplant to Oakland afforded Michael the opportunity to continue learning and teaching\, and to build a n even stronger bi-coastal musical community of students\, educators\, and professional players. He now teaches Big Band and Small Ensembles at the College of San Mateo\, and has been a Teaching Artist with SFJAZZ since 20 16\; Michael can be seen and heard regularly around the Bay Area as an acc ompanist and as a leader.
