In honor of Women's History Month\, come l earn more from Dr. Barbara Oberlander about the fascinating life of Mary E dwards Walker\, the only woman to be awarded the Congressional Medal of Ho nor.

Dr. Mary Edwards Walker (1832&ndash\;1919) was a \;ground breaking American surgeon\, women's rights activist\, abolitionist\, and l ecturer\, known as the first female U.S. Army surgeon and the only woman t o receive the Medal of Honor (later restored). Raised by progressive paren ts who encouraged female education\, she graduated from Syracuse Medical C ollege in 1855\, defying norms by wearing trousers\, even at her wedding. During the Civil War\, she served the Union Army\, was captured as a spy\, and later championed dress reform and women's suffrage\, becoming a symbo l of nonconformity and equality. \;

Dr. Oberlander was a Santa Fe College History professor for 30 years. She has given over 100 public presentations on outstanding women\, with a special focus on First Ladies.
