T.M. Landry College Prep\, a small private school in Breaux Br idge\, Louisiana\, boasted a 100 percent college acceptance rate\, placing students at nearly every Ivy League university in the country. The specta cle of Landry students opening their acceptance letters to Harvard and Yal e was broadcast on television and even celebrated by Michelle Obama. It be came a national ritual to watch the miraculous success of these youngsters &mdash\;miraculous because Breaux Bridge is one of the poorest counties in the country\, ranked close to the bottom for test scores and high school graduation rates. T.M. Landry was said to be &ldquo\;minting prodigies\,&r dquo\; and the prodigies were often black.

How did the school do i t? It didn&rsquo\;t: It was a scam\, pulled off with fake transcripts and personal essays telling fake stories of triumph over adversity. She an d her team at \;The Baltimore Sun \;were 2016 Pulitzer Pr ize finalists for their coverage of the death of Freddie Gray and the riot s that followed. She covers the White House and lives in Maryland.

Adam Harris is an author and journalist based in Virginia.
He is the author of The State Must Provide: Why America&rsquo\;s Col leges Have Always Been Unequal&mdash\;and How to Set Them Right. His next book\, Is This America?\, a narrative history of the South&r squo\;s influence on American politics\, will be published by Pantheon.

Adam is currently a senior fellow at New America&rsquo\;s Education Policy program. He is also a keynote speaker with The Lavin Agency and has spoken at universities across the country.

He contributes to The Atlantic and The Argument. His essays and reporting have also appeared in The New York Times\, The Guardian\, BB C\, and EBONY.
