  into the woods to carve animals\, figures and names into tree trunks. Dur
 ing his lifetime\, Mr. Pierce created thousands of&nbsp\;low-relief wood c
 arvings and small sculptures of animals. Much&nbsp\;of his work addressed 
 historical themes\, religious stories\, or scenes from his own life story.
