This workshop is designed for part icipants 16+.
\nBring a garment\, bag or other textile item that has a tear\, seam opening or hole in it and mend it yourself with he lp from a local expert sewist. A variety of methods for repairing holes an d tears and closing up burst seams will be explained\, including the use o f fusible materials and patches\, sewing and darning with a sewing machine \, and using hand-sewing needles to darn or slip-stitch items. We&rsquo\;l l work together as a group\, studying the various items brought by partici pants to learn how and where to use each of these mending methods.
\nAbout the Instructor: \;
\nDanielle Thalman be gan teaching herself to sew clothes on an ancient &ldquo\;red eye&rdquo\; Singer at age 9. That interest eventually expanded to include other textil e arts such as screen printing\, fabric dyeing\, quilting\, digital art an d using Cricut smart cutters.
\nNow 63 and retired from public schoo l teaching in Southern Oregon\, Thalman teaches sewing for COCC and does s ome production sewing for a local company. She also helps run a Bend-based volunteer group that repairs sewing machines\, which are then donated to local members of the community. She particularly enjoys rehabbing vintage sergers and teaching people how to use them. The MakerSpace volunteer craf ts her own jeans\, t-shirts and swimwear\, as well as jackets\, leggings\, hats\, socks\, bags etc. While the often solitary act of making clothing has always given her joy\, in recent years Thalman has come to see how cra fting can promote community.
\n&ldquo\;Creating with others is not o nly fun\, it creates bonds that enrich us all. Mending items\, upcycling a nd keeping stuff out of the landfill are all positives for the environment \, too. I love how the MakerSpace promotes all of this.&rdquo\;
\nTh alman has climbed and flyfished extensively throughout the west but lately has been content to fish and climb locally and hang out at her home just north of Redmond\, which she shares with her husband\, cat and about 28 se wing machines.
