Tracing its beginnings in 1926 as &ldquo\;Negro Histo ry Week&rdquo\; to its contested place today\, the book examines Black his tory as a liberatory tradition and considers what is at stake in preservin g and teaching it at a time when the teaching and public understanding of Black history face increasing challenges.
