\n< p>Education - denied to enslaved people - was one of the most important pr iorities of African Americans. But in Montgomery County\, where slavery ex isted\, public education was not available to Black children until more th an ten years after it was established for white children. Even then\, the practice of &ldquo\;separate but equal&rdquo\; schools was anything but eq ual\, and no Black high school was built until long into the 20th century. \nGet inspired by these African American schools and their incredible impact on Black education all over the South! A surprising numb er of these schools still stand in Montgomery County\, including several b uilt through a partnership between Booker T. Washington and Julius Rosenwa ld - "the biggest philanthropist you've never heard of"!

\nLibrary Program Attendance (both virtual and in the branch) is limited to participants within the sug gested age range of the program. Children attending an MCPL program under the age of 8 must be accompanied by an adult. Adults attending a program i ntended for children must have an accompanying child.
\nIf you plan to attend with a group of ten or more\, please contact the branch at least one week before the program to discuss how your group might be accommodat ed.
