 els for young adults and the editor of the recent anthology\,&nbsp\;<em>Ba
 nned Together: Our Fight for Readers' Rights</em>\, which received five-st
 arred reviews and was named a best book of the year by <em>Kirkus Reviews<
 /em> and&nbsp\;<em>School Library Journal</em>. Her 2015 novel\, <em>Out o
 f Darkness</em>\, has become one of the most frequently banned books in th
 e U.S. despite never being challenged before 2021. P&eacute\;rez holds a P
 hD in comparative literature from Indiana University Bloomington and is an
  associate professor at The Ohio State University where she directs the Un
