Abigail Richardson-Schulte\, HPO Composer- in-Residence\, offers a fascinating look at the lives and music of the com posers featured on the HPO stage. In this talk\, she discusses Tchaikovsky \, Rachmaninoff\, and Pä\;rt.
\nRussia entered the Classical era music scene late\, only joining in the Romantic era in the 19th century. Composers had to find their voice in a scene that was just beginning. Tcha ikovsky was a student in the first year of the first conservatory\, naviga ting the difficult path of a composer influenced by both the folk music of his country and the European tradition that preceded him. All three of th ese composers struggled and left Russia in some way: Tchaikovsky self-exil ed for years\, Rachmaninoff left for the U.S.A.\, and Pä\;rt's country \, Estonia\, left the Soviet Union. These composers reached the upper eche lons despite the odds against them.

\nAw ard-winning composer Abigail Richardson-Schulte was born in Oxford\, Engla nd\, and moved to Canada as a child. Her music has been commissioned and p erformed by major orchestras\, presenters\, music festivals and broadcaste rs\, including the Festival Pré\;sences of Paris.
