Imagine having a best friend seven ty-seven years older than you! That is exactly the situation for Sophia Winslow\, who shares with her neighbor\, Sophie Gershowitz\, not on ly a name\, but a range of likes and dislikes\, familiar daily rituals\, a nd\, most of all\, each other&rsquo\;s company. The older woman\, though\, has been having difficulty recently remembering small things\, and young Sophia lovingly tries to help her friend strengthen her cognition before t he doctors test it. What the two find is a treasure chest of old memories that Sophie has kept hidden for decades\, about her childhood and family i n Poland and the events that led to her separation from them. NOTE: Some k nowledge of the Holocaust is required to understand the implications of th e stories Sophie begins telling starting with chapter 27\, though no viole nce is described in the book.

\nCover to Cover \;is a new monthly reading\, discussion\, and activity group created just for students in 2nd and 3rd grade. Each month\, we will read a different chapter book that you can check out ahead of time from t he Connie Morella Library (or read or listen to on one of our free e-book apps\, if available)\, along with a specially prepared reading guide to he lp you get ready for the group's next meeting. At each session\, we'll hav e an icebreaker activity and discuss the plot\, characters\, topics\, sett ings\, and themes of the book in a variety of different ways\, from tradit ional question-and-answer discussion to role plays\, think-pair-share\, fi shbowl\, and more to encourage fun interaction among the participants. The n we'll finish with an activity related to the book--for example\, a small art or craft project or interactive game--to reinforce the main themes or topics. Books will be chosen from among a variety of genres--adventure\, humor\, realistic fiction\, science-fiction\, fantasy\, mystery--with a ra nge of diverse characters in a variety of different cultural backgrounds a nd life circumstances. Many of the books used will be from lists of nomine es at the appropriate age-level for honors such as the Maryland Associatio n of School Libraries&rsquo\; Black-Eyed Susan Award and the Maryland Libr ary Association&rsquo\;s Youth Services Division&rsquo\;s Blue Crab Young Reader Award.
\nWe'll use a range of formats\, \;from a traditio nal book club\, possibly with a shared read-aloud component. Volunteers ca n practice reading out loud to their peers the first chapter of the next m onth's book\, or perhaps a short story or poems chosen for their suitabili ty. This program is designed to support students transitioning from beginn ing readers and simple chapter books into the next challenge of longer cha pter books with more complex vocabulary\, different writing styles\, and f ewer pictures\, but all materials chosen for use will be in the general on -level range for ages 7 to 9. \;
\nLibrary Program Attendance&nb sp\;(both virtual and in the branch) is limited to participants within the suggested age range of the program. Children attending an MCPL program un der the age of 8 must be accompanied by an adult. Adults attending a progr am intended for children must have an accompanying child.
