MCCR investigates complaints of discrimination in \;e
mployment\, \;housing\, \;public accommodations​\, \;he
alth services\, \;leasing of commercial property​\, and the&nbs
p\;State&rsquo\;s commercial non-discrimination policy \;from members
of protected classes that are covered under those laws.
MCCR is go verned by a \;nine-member Commission​ \;appointed by the Go vernor and confirmed by the Maryland Senate. Commission members are appoin ted to serve six-year terms. The Commission meets once a month to set poli cy and review programmatic initiatives.​
\nThe Commission is an independent agency that serves individuals\, businesses\, and communiti es throughout the State. \;Its mandate is to protect against discrimin ation based on \;race\, color\, religion or creed\, sex\, age\, ancest ry or national origin\, marital status\, physical or mental disability\, s exual orientation\, \;and \;gender identity. \;In employment c ases\, discrimination based on \;genetic information \;is prohibit ed. In housing cases\, discrimination based on \;familial status \ ;and \;​source of income \;is also unlawful. In both employ ment and housing cases\, discrimination based on \;military status&nbs p\;is illegal.
\nIn addition\, the Commission assists employers in d eveloping bias-free selection\, hiring\, retention\, promotion and contrac ting procedures\; increases equal housing opportunities to all groups in M aryland\; ensures equal access to public accommodations and services\; pro motes knowledge and understanding of anti-discrimination laws\; and helps to improve civil rights within the State.
