Laura Ingalls Wilder's "Little House on the Prairie" books ha ve been captivating children of all ages for over 94 years and the TV show that was inspired by those books is still being replayed on television st ations around the world. The popularity of the Little House franchise is c ertainly an enduring part of U.S. History.
\nRose Wilder Lane was an author\, journalist\, world traveler\, and Libertarian. She was born on D ecember 5\, 1886 near DeSmet in Dakota Territory (later South Dakota) to A lmanzo and Laura Wilder. In 1894 the family moved to Mansfield\, Missouri and settled on Rocky Ridge Farm. \;
\nThe Herbert Hoover Presidential Library-Museum houses the Rose Wilder Lane Papers\, which document her extraordinary life as a jour nalist and an author\, and reveal the important role she played in her lat er years formulating and promoting Libertarian ideas. \; Lane was also an early biographer of Herbert Hoover &mdash\; she published \;The Ma king of Herbert Hoover \;in 1920.
\nLane was commissioned to wri te \;The Making of Herbert Hoover \;by Charles K. Field\, editor o f \;Sunset \;(a West Coast literary magazine) and a personal frien d of Herbert Hoover. \; At the time\, Hoover was contemplating a run f or President in 1920\, and Field wanted to help. \; Lane&rsquo\;s biog raphy likely had little effect on the campaign\, but Lane and Hoover conti nued for many years to correspond about topics of shared interest.
\nLane&rsquo\;s papers also reveal her important role as the editor of the &ldquo\;Little House on the Prairie&rdquo\; books written by her mother\, Laura Ingalls Wilder. \; Wilder had only limited writing experience wh en she embarked on the series of books that captivate young readers to the present day. \; Quite logically\, Wilder turned to her daughter\, a m ore experienced writer\, for assistance.
\nTheir collaboration was n ot without conflict. \; Correspondence preserved in the Lane Papers do cuments the dynamic tension of the creative process. \; Wilder submitt ed drafts of her work to her daughter with a certain trepidation. \; L ane edited and typed the manuscripts\, and made suggestions for modificati ons she thought necessary. \; She also served as her mother&rsquo\;s g o-between with literary agents and publishers. \; Over more than a doz en years\, Wilder and Lane captured in eight volumes the essence of growin g up on the American frontier.
