 /iframe></p>\n<p>The <strong>Washington Toho Koto Society</strong> is a gr
 oup of over one hundred players and friends\, organized in 1971 by Kyoko O
 kamoto to promote the enjoyment of Japanese koto music. The Society\, now 
 led by Yuriko Gandolfo from the University of Maryland\, College Park\, ha
 s performed at many national events\, including Presidential inaugurations
 \, Japanese embassy events\, Sister City and State programs\, National Che
 rry Blossom Festivals\, and international folk festivals.</p>\n<p>Their re
 pertoire ranges from early 17th-century koto music to contemporary composi
 tions. Performances often feature other traditional instruments\, such as 
 shamisen and shakuhachi\, as well as Western instruments.</p>\n<p>The koto
 \, a thirteen-string zither\, produces an evocative sound widely recognize
 d in Japan as uniquely Japanese. Made of paulownia wood (kiri) and about s
 ix feet long\, the koto has movable bridges and is played with three ivory
  picks on the right hand\, while the left hand manipulates the strings to
