Piecework Legacies brings together experim ental quilted works by seven South Florida fiber artists\, each engaging t he long history of quilting while expanding what the form can be.
\nQuilts have been part of American material culture since the eighteenth ce ntury\, serving both practical and expressive roles. They function as obje cts for warmth\, storytelling\, and community building\, and as records of personal experiences.
\nPiecework Legacies showcases the work of La uren Baccus\, Regina Durante Jestrow\, Bex McCharen\, Emily Peters\, Carri e Sieh\, Pangea Kali Virga\, and Carrington Ware. In these works\, the art ists present quilts as soft sculpture\, multimedia assemblage\, pastiches of personal and physical media\, meditations\, and large-scale narrative w orks\, among other approaches. Many of the works on view incorporate reuse d or upcycled materials\, continuing quilting&rsquo\;s longstanding relati onship with material sustainability.
\nBy reimagining traditional ma terial\, scale\, technique and imagery\, these artists demonstrate how a c enturies-old craft continues to adapt to contemporary realities.
