As thirteen of Britain&rsquo\;s colonies d eclared independence in 1776\, the empire&rsquo\;s Florida colonies\, East Florida and West Florida\, remained loyal to King George. Eyed by America n and Spanish forces alike\, the Floridas were soon engulfed in war. This lecture tells the often-overlooked story of Florida in the War of Independ ence.
\nDr. David Head is a scholar of early America who currently r esearches the American Revolution and the early American republic. He rece ived his Ph.D. in history from the University at Buffalo\, the State Unive rsity of New York\, and his work has been supported by the National Endowm ent for the Humanities\, George Washington's Mount Vernon\, the Library Co mpany of Philadelphia\, the Gilder Lehrman Institute\, and the Maryland Hi storical Society. His most recent book is an edited collection called "A R epublic of Scoundrels: The Schemers\, Intriguers\, and Adventurers Who Cre ated a New American Nation."
