The library celebrates the Berkeley Commun ity Chorus and Orchestra&rsquo\;s 60th \;anniversary with a 6-week lon g exhibit of photographs\, mementos\, and ephemera. The exhibit is at the Central Library at 2090 Kittredge Street from May 1-June 13. \;
\n< p>Join us Saturday\, May 23\, starting at 3:00 PM to learn more about this long-time Berkeley community organization\, their June performance of the Terezin Requiem\, and to browse the exhibit.\nLight refreshments w
ill be served afterwards.
The Berkeley Community Chorus and Orc
hestra (BCCO) commissioned composer Michael Schachter to
create a choral work to commemorate the organization&rsquo\;s 60th anniver
sary and to honor the memory of the prisoners in the Terezin concentration
camp. At this library event on May 23\, Berkeley Symphony cellist and San
Francisco Conservatory music history professor\, Isaac Pastor-Cherm
ak\, will speak about the extraordinary challenges of compose
rs and musicians in Nazi-occupied Europe\, and will present several exampl
es of music composed and performed in Terezin and other concentration camp
s. The audience will also hear from a descendent of Otto Bendix who was im
prisoned at Terezin. \;
The library in partnership with the Be rkeley Community Chorus and Orchestra invites the Berkeley community to at tend a performance of the Terezin Requiem\, which is scheduled from June 1 2-14 at the First Presbyterian Church located at 2407 Dana St\, Berkeley.
