Women in History Presents Molly Pitcher. B orn Mary Ludwig in 1754 to German immigrant parents Mary grew up in a smal l modest house with her family. While in her early twenties she married a barber named William Hays. At the outbreak of the Revolutionary War\, Hays enlisted in a Pennsylvania regiment. Mary's place in American history was solidified on June 28\, 1778 at the Battle of Monmouth\, where she carrie d water to overheated and wounded soldiers. When her husband was wounded M ary took his place at the cannon and began firing. Later General Washingto n asked who the woman was firing the cannon and he was told it was "Sergea nt Molly."
