 812\; no British troops marched through the county&rsquo\;s streets\; no r
 ioters protested in its towns. But Montgomery County&mdash\;its roads\, it
 s towns\, and\, especially\, its people became deeply involved in the war&
 mdash\; some as victims of one of the most vile events of the war\, others
  as heroes of one of its finest\, and others just doing their duty as they
  saw it. This is a talk about how and why the county responded to the war 
 the way it did.</span></p>\n<p><span style="color: #000000\;">Join&nbsp\;<
 strong>Brookeville historian Sandra Heiler&nbsp\;</strong>for another exci
 ting talk-- in this case\, around Montgomery County's role in the War of 1
 812. As part of the lecture\, learn how Brookeville\, MD\,&nbsp\;became kn
 own&nbsp\;as the "<strong>US</strong> <strong>Capital for a Day</strong>\,
 " when then-President James Madison\, along with Attorney General Richard 
 Rush and General John Mason\,&nbsp\;fled Washington\, D.C.\, after British
  forces burned all the public buildings in the city.</span></p>\n<p><span

 tyle="color: #000000\;"><strong>SANDRA HEILER</strong>&nbsp\;is an early A
 merican historian specializing in the years leading up to the American Rev
 olution and the early Federal period. She is currently the Treasurer of Mo
 ntgomery Preservation\, Inc.\, and a member of the county&rsquo\;s Rustic 
 Roads Advisory Committee\, as well as a member of Montgomery History&rsquo
 \;s Speakers Bureau. She served on Montgomery County&rsquo\;s Historic Pre
 servation Commission for 13 years\, three as vice-chairman and three as ch
 airman\, and she is a former board member of Preservation Maryland. Sandy 
 has a BA in Mathematics and an MA in American Studies and Historic Preserv
 ation from Boston University. After a 38-year career as a computer scienti
 st\, she retired from Verizon Laboratories as Principal Scientist and Dire
 ctor of Verizon&rsquo\;s Information Technology Lab.</span></p>\n<p></p>\n
