X-ALT-DESC;FMTTYPE=text/html:<p>This lecture explores how religious obliga
tion and modern medical ethics shape the patient-doctor relationship. In J
udaism\, doctors have an obligation to treat and save lives\, at the same
time that patients are obligated to seek treatment (Hishtadlus)\, while al
so acknowledging God as the ultimate source of healing. In Orthodox commun
ities\, medical decisions often involve consultation with rabbis or legal
scholars (poskim)\, adding a halakhic layer to informed consent. Jewish me
dical ethics may also allow limited disclosure in certain cases\, overridi
ng the patient&rsquo\;s autonomy to protect the patient&rsquo\;s well-bein
g\, to prevent psychological harm\, and to save a life. These nuanced diff
erences highlight the interplay between faith\, law\, and medicine in Jewi
 sh medical decision-making.</p>\n<p>Dafna Ben-Yosef\, PhD\, is the&nbsp\;D
irector of Jewish Lifelong Learning at Siegal Lifelong Learning / CWRU.</p
