 ay of Butte&rsquo\;s famous red-light district. She began her business adv
 entures in St. Paul as early as 1887. In 1890 she brought her expertise wi
 th her out West to Montana. McGinnis&rsquo\; life in Butte challenges the 
 stereotype that madams of the West were fringe characters in a lawless lan
 d. She was a successful businesswoman who navigated the challenges of brot
 hel proprietorship in a legally savvy way.</p>\n<p>Grace testified in cour
 t\, paid fines for her misdeeds\, filed tort suits\, actions of replevin f
 or private property\, had others arrested for attempting to defraud her\, 
 and much more. Despite making her livelihood through the illegal promotion
  of prostitution\, McGinnis utilized the legal system in a myriad of legit
 imate ways. Women like McGinnis helped to build Montana&rsquo\;s earliest 
 towns\, pumping money into city coffers through both legitimate and illegi
 timate sources of revenue.</p>\n<p>Grace McGinnis&rsquo\; story illuminate
 s that a prostitute&rsquo\;s place in society was more nuanced than we hav
 e previously believed. This presentation explores her life through the use
  of primary sources such as newspapers\, census records\, city ledgers\, a
 nd court cases.</p>\n<p>Victoria Lyons is a historian and an attorney. Her
  research focuses on marginalized and unvoiced populations who too often f
 ind themselves on the wrong side of the law. She is the owner and founder 
 of High Noon History. Which is an online platform to promote and educate a
 bout the history of the West. She also provides consulting services to bus
 inesses and individuals for historical research projects. Victoria is a pr
 oud board member of the The Extreme History Project. She resides in Bozema
 n with her husband\, and two children and enjoys exploring the world with
