 introduce participants to the basics of Arabic calligraphy. The group will
  write a few things in Arabic according to the basic rules of Arabic calli
 graphy\, including a greeting phrase\, our names\, the name of our country
  (ex. Canada)\, and the name of a person we love\, using different styles 
 of Arabic calligraphy.</p>\n<p>Each participant will also create their own
  postcard in Arabic.</p>\n<p>Jamal Saeed is a Syrian author\, editor\, vis
 ual artist\, Arabic calligrapher\, and translator. He worked in publishing
  and was co-founder of Friends of Art &amp\; Literature\, aimed at support
 ing young Syrian creators. When secret intelligence threatened members\, t
 he organization dissolved. Jamal spent 12 years in a Syrian prison as a pr
 isoner of conscience. Jamal landed in Canada with his family as a refugee 
 in 2016. In 2020\, he published <em>Yara&rsquo\;s Spring</em>\, a children
 &rsquo\;s novel co-authored with Sharon McKay. Two years later\, a memoir\
 , <em>My Road from Damascus</em>. And in fall 2025\, two books: <em>Prince
 ss Nai and Other Stories</em>\, a collection of short fiction\, and <em>My
  Sister the Apple Tree</em>\, a picture book co-authored with Jordan Scott
 . He is a member of the 2026 Kingston WritersFest Board of Directors.</p>\
