Cars on McCullers \;(1917-1967) was the author of numerous wor ks of fiction and nonfiction\, including \;The Heart is a Lonely H unter\, \;The Member of the Wedding\, \;Reflecti ons in a Golden Eye\, and \;Clock Without Hands. Born in Columbus\, Georgia\, on February 19\, 1917\, she became a promising piani st and enrolled in the Juilliard School of Music in New York when she was seventeen\, but lacking money for tuition\, she never attended classes. In stead she studied writing at Columbia University\, which ultimately led to \;The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter\, the novel that made her an overnight literary sensation. On September 29\, 1967\, at age fifty\, she died in Nyack\, New York\, where she is buried.

Carlos Dews&n bsp\;is the leading authority on the life and work of Carson McCullers.â €¯ He edited McCullers&rsquo\;s unfinished autobiography\, \;Il lumination and Night Glare\, \;and edited the Library of America& rsquo\;s two volume \;Complete Works of Carson McCullers. He was the founding director of the Carson McCullers Center for Writers and M usicians at Columbus State University.â€¯â€¯Dews is Professor of E nglish at John Cabot University in Rome\, Italy.
