DESCRIPTION:Join us for our 3rd Annual Women Making STEAM lecture series\,
fully on Zoom. We invite local women professionals to share their impacts
and research contributions in the fields of STEAM. .\nhttps://broward.lib

X-ALT-DESC;FMTTYPE=text/html:<p>STEAM stands for&nbsp\;<strong>Science\,&n
 bsp\;Technology\,&nbsp\;Art\, and&nbsp\;Math</strong>. This year\, we are
joined by a special group of women who are leaders\, educators\, researche
rs\, and creators in the STEAM world. Don't miss out engaging with these b
rillant thinkers as they share their journey through a traditionally male-
dominated industry and how their work has contributed to communities\, glo
 bally.&nbsp\;</p>\n<p>...</p>\n<p><em>Fiction-Science Pattern Mapping in L
 iterary STEM</em></p>\n<p style="text-align: justify\;">Scientists have ma
de amazing discoveries about processes and forces in nature. But some phen
 omena\, such as time dilation\, quantum entanglement\, and wave-particle d
uality\, are difficult if not impossible to conceptualize. How should we c
ommunicate the complex and counterintuitive&mdash\;whether to colleagues\,
students\, or the public? Dr. Trauvitch proposes&nbsp\;that we do so with
a tool that is not an instrument like a microscope\, nor a machine like a
  particle collider\, but a&nbsp\;rhetorical&nbsp\;device: fiction.</p>\n<p
style="text-align: justify\;">Fiction opens the door to confounding natur
al phenomena through a process of fiction-to-science pattern mapping\,&nbs
 p\;or fi-sci\, for short.&nbsp\; The fi-sci model runs on analogy-making:
it involves identifying commonalities between works of fiction and science
processes. Fi-sci analogies suggest that&nbsp\;our&nbsp\;capacities to pe
rceive strange scientific phenomena can be enhanced by&mdash\;may sometime
s turn on&mdash\;our experiences with fiction. As a perceptual framework t
hat spurs us to see things anew\, fi-sci pattern mapping has an extraordin
ary potential to power students' interdisciplinary fluency and\, beyond ac
ademia\, galvanize science communication and accessibility.&nbsp\;&nbsp\;<
 /p>\n<p><strong>About Dr. Rhona Trauvitch:&nbsp\;</strong></p>\n<p>Rhona T
rauvitch\, Ph.D.\, is an associate teaching professor at Florida Internati
onal University\, specializing in cross-disciplinary analogical reasoning
 at the intersection of literature and STEM. Trauvitch developed the&nbsp\;
 fiction&rarr\;science\, or fi-sci\, pattern mapping model\, demonstrating
that fictionality has the rhetorical power to promote science accessibilit
y and understanding\; her monograph <em>Fi-Sci: Avatars of Science in Fict
ion</em> is forthcoming from the Ohio State University Press. The pedagogi
cal application of Trauvitch&rsquo\;s research is led by FIU&rsquo\;s&nbsp
\;Science &amp\; Fiction Lab\, of which she is Founding Director. She has
been awarded a $150\,000 Humanities Initiatives grant from the National En
dowment for the Humanities (NEH) and a $400\,000 Improving Undergraduate S
TEM Education grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) in support
 of the Lab&rsquo\;s projects.</p>\n<p>...</p>\n<p>Upcoming talks:&nbsp\;</
