Prussian-born Friedrich Wilhelm August Hei nrich Ferdinand Freiherr von Steuben arrived at Valley Forge in February 1 778 and was warmly received by George Washington. Von Steuben established a strong bond between officers and enlisted soldiers\, and his teachings a nd strategies\, found in the "Blue Book\," serve as the standard for milit ary practices\, covering various aspects from administration and court-mar tial to sanitation and hygiene. \;His contributions marked a significa nt improvement in the performance of U.S. troops\, and he is consequently regarded as one of the fathers of the \;United States Army. This progr am is held in honor of German-American Heritage Month and America 250\, th e United States Semiquincentennial\, marking the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence of the United States.
