 >Amanda Uhle</strong> writes about culture\, politics\, and civil rights f
 or&nbsp\;<em>The Washington Post</em>\,&nbsp\;<em>POLITICO</em>\,&nbsp\;<e
m>The Boston Globe</em>\, and&nbsp\;<em>Newsweek</em>. Uhle is coeditor of
the <em>I\, Witnes</em>s series of first-person stories by youth activist
s\, former director of the 826michigan youth writing and tutoring program\
, and cofounder\, with Dave Eggers\, of the International Congress of Yout
h Voices. Their work with youth writing organizations worldwide is documen
ted in&nbsp\;<em>Unnecessarily Beautiful Spaces for Young Minds on Fire</e
m>. Uhle is the publisher and executive director of <em>McSweeney&rsquo\;s
</em>\, an independent nonprofit publisher of distinctive books and magazi
 nes.</p>\n<p>In <em><strong>Destroy this House</strong></em>\, the Long fa
mily&rsquo\;s love was fierce\, their lifestyle bizarre\, and their decept
ions countless. Once her parents were gone\, Amanda Uhle realized she was
closer to them than anyone else\, yet she found herself utterly confounded
by the lives they had led.</p>\n<p>Amanda&rsquo\;s striving fashion desig
ner mother and her charismatic wheeler-dealer father wove a complex life t
ogether that spanned ten different homes across five states over forty per
plexing years. Throughout her childhood\, as her mother&rsquo\;s hoarding
disorder flourished and her father&rsquo\;s schemes crumbled\, contradicti
ons abounded. They bartered for dental surgery and drove their massive Lin
coln Town Car to the food bank. When financial ruin struck\, they abandone
 d their repossessed mansion for humble parish housing\, and Amanda&rsquo\;
s father became a preacher. They swung between being filthy rich and dirt
poor\, devious and virtuous\, lonely and loved\, fake and real.</p>\n<p>Am
anda Uhle will be in conversation with <strong>Dan Moulthrop</strong>\, CE
O of The City Club since 2013\, co-founder of The Civic Commons\, the form
 er host of 90.3 WCPN's&nbsp\;<em>Sound of Ideas</em>\,&nbsp\;and co-author
\, with Dave Eggers and Ninive Calegari\, of the best selling book&nbsp\;<
em>Teachers Have it Easy: The Big Sacrifices and Small Salaries of America
 's Teachers</em>&nbsp\;(The New Press\, 2005)\, which provided the basis f
 or the 2011 documentary&nbsp\;<em>American Teacher</em>.</p>\n<p><em><stro
