\nTo mark the historic anniversary\, 125 years after the first dedication\, the cour thouse and the Lincoln Legacy Committee of Champaign County will host a va ried program including the reading of a special proclamation\, a panel dis cussion\, musical entertainment\, and\, finally\, a birthday cake. The pro clamation signed by the Champaign County Board will remind us of the impor tance of justice for all. Students from University High School will play m usic appropriate to the era. The panel\, made up of Justice Rita Garman\, lawyer and historian Steve Beckett\, and archaeologist\, historian\, and a uthor Brian Adams\, will be moderated by Pat Cain\, Manager of the Champai gn County Historical Archives at The Urbana Free Library.
\nJustice Rita Garman was a judge in Illinois for 49 years. She began in nearby Verm ilion County and became the first female Chief Justice of the Illinois Sup reme Court. Justice Garman will speak briefly about the importance of cour ts\, courtrooms\, and courthouses to the American way of life.
\nUrb ana-based attorney and retired University of Illinois College of Law Trial Advocacy director Steve Beckett has studied Abraham Lincoln since childho od. His dedication to local history led him to take the lead in the effort to restore the 1901 courthouse\, especially its clock tower. He will spea k about the restoration process.
\nBrian Adams has comprehensively s tudied the chief architect of the 1901 courthouse in his book\, Joseph William Royer\, Urbana&rsquo\;s Ar chitect. In addition to the courthouse\, Royer and his various firm s designed many Urbana landmarks during his long career: Urbana High Schoo l\, The Urbana Free Library\, the Urbana-Lincoln Hotel (now Royer Hotel)\, and Leal Elementary School. Adams will reflect on the design of the 1901 courthouse and will also briefly discuss Frederick Gage Brown\, Royer&rsqu o\;s little-known partner in the courthouse project. \;
