On September 17\, 1944\, thousands of Alli ed paratroopers dropped into occupied Netherlands. This operation\, known as Operation Market Garden\, intended to secure bridges that would cross i nto Germany&rsquo\;s western border. Instead\, it failed and became one of the most controversial operations of the Second World War and led to over 3\,000 American casualties.
