Join Swedish American Museum Curator Sarah Hawkinson for a presentation on Swedish-American history\, culture\, and community in Chicagoland and the role of the Swedish-American Museum in th e area. People have been immigrating to America for centuries. With each n ew wave\, different cultures and ideas have shaped the country into what i t is today. From 1850 to 1930\, 1.3 million Swedes left their homes for Am erica. During this time\, many settled in Chicago\, bringing with them the ir Swedish culture and traditions. In Chicago\, Swedes created a new home for themselves in Andersonville. Although many Swedish businesses have clo sed\, the Swedish American Museum (which is celebrating its 50th anniversa ry this year!) continues to uphold and honor Swedish history\, heritage\, and culture in Andersonville.
\nIn this presentation\, Sarah will di ve into the various factors that prompted rising Swedish immigration in th e mid-to-late 19th century\, the immigration journey itself\, and how Chic ago has been shaped in many ways by Swedish immigrants to the Midwest.
