Waterloo Region has been blessed with an a bundant supply of groundwater\, one that literally lies beneath our feet\, which has supported a diverse and vibrant community. A challenge with a g roundwater source that is out of sight is that it is often out of mind\, a nd we forget to manage and protect it adequately. This presentation will l ook at some reasons why our local groundwater management approach has cont ributed to our water uncertainty and explore some opportunities for our co mmunity to better manage our groundwater resource and move towards greater water security.

About Dr. Hugh Simpson
Dr. Hugh Simpson is a Principal Investigator and Senior Research Scientist wit h the Morwick G360 Groundwater Research Institute at the University of Gue lph. Hugh is also a research consultant with Grounded Collaborative Servic es. Hugh is a Professional Geoscientist and has more than 30 years of expe rience working in provincial and regional municipal government focusing on the management and protection of groundwater resources.

\n

His curre nt research and practice concern collaborative interdisciplinary and trans disciplinary approaches to complex problem-solving concerning groundwater management and protection involving the diverse communities and their inte rests in agricultural and rural settings. This reflects his broader intere st in promoting the involvement of communities in groundwater management a nd protection in the context of the emerging field of Socio-Hydrogeology.< /p>\n

He served as a subject matter expert concerning groundwater and pr ivate water system policy and program efforts throughout Ontario\, includi ng leading Source Protection Planning activities and private water well be st management practices knowledge translation and transfer\, with the Onta rio Ministry of Agriculture\, Food and Rural Affairs from 2000 through 202 2. He provided technical review and guidance concerning private and public water and wastewater initiatives and coordinated the private-municipal wa ter well interference program\, to better manage and protect local groundw ater resource throughout rural portions of the Regional Municipality of Wa terloo from 1992 to 2000.
