dustry provides the backdrop for author and scientist Dr. Paul Boor&rsquo\
;s historical thriller\, The Ice Merchant. Boor\, who was raised in the Mo
hawk Valley and Adirondack region\, will discuss his newly published novel
and read selections from his poetry collection at the Old Forge Library o
 n Thursday\, October 15\, at 5 p.m.<br />Set in the late 1800s\, The Ice M
erchant follows the region&rsquo\;s thriving ice trade while exploring the
beginnings of scientific research and the disturbing practice of obtainin
g human bodies for dissection in medical schools. Boor will share the stor
y behind the novel\, discuss the historical and scientific elements woven
into it\, and answer questions from the audience.</p>\n<p>Boor will also r
ead selections from What Palms Know\, his recently published collection of
poetry from Lamar University Literary Press. Many of the poems reflect on
the natural beauty of the Adirondacks\, as well as the sublime\, the ordi
nary\, and the scientific.</p>\n<p>A Harvard-trained pathologist and scien
tist\, Boor is a professor at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Ga
lveston\, the oldest medical school west of the Mississippi. His writing f
requently brings together his scientific background and stories rooted in
real science and history. His other novels include the prophetic 2007 biom
edical thriller The Blood Notes of Peter Mallow and the political biomedic
al thriller of the Vietnam Era\, An Ellipse of Skin.</p>\n<p>The program w
