X-ALT-DESC;FMTTYPE=text/html:<p>Fabio Capano is a Visiting Scholar in Resi
dence in the History Department at American University\, specializing in t
wentieth-century Europe. He is the author of the new book\, <em>Cold War T
 rieste: Nationalism\, Diplomacy\, and Italianit&agrave\; in a Contested Bo
rderland</em>. His research covers nationalism\, political violence\, mode
rn Italy\, and Cold War borderlands. He has held teaching and administrati
ve roles\, and his work has been published in academic journals and edited
volumes.&nbsp\;</p>\n<p>How did nationalism survive and transform on the
southern edge of the Iron Curtain? This book investigates the contested so
cio-political landscape of the Adriatic city of Trieste and its surroundin
 g borderlands between 1945 and 1975. Taking a multidimensional approach\,
the author explores how the entanglement of local\, national\, and interna
tional politics shaped the enduring influence of nationalism in Cold War I
taly. Drawing on a rich tapestry of primary sources\, the book reveals the
hidden power dynamics between the halls of power in Rome and the streets
 of Trieste\, showing how they fundamentally reshaped the community&rsquo\;
s relationship with the nation-state during the long journey toward the 19
75 Osimo Treaty\, which permanently settled the postwar border between Ita
ly and Yugoslavia.</p>\n<p>The program will be held in the First Floor Mee
ting Room. Dr. Capano will give a multimedia presentation including opport
unities to ask questions.</p>\n<p>Questions about this program?&nbsp\;Cont
