 tory is tension. While we often talk about the need for conflict in plotti
 ng\, it is only one of many ways to create tension. In this workshop\, you
 &rsquo\;ll learn how to raise the stakes in your writing by increasing the
  external and internal pressure on your characters\, using tempo and pacin
 g to deepen emotions\, sharpening dialogue to intensify interactions\, and
  adding background and context to make every action and word as riveting a
 nd significant as possible.</p>\n<p>About the presenter: <strong>Michael N
 . McGregor</strong> is fiction writer\, essayist\, memoirist\, and biograp
 her. <em>Kirkus Reviews</em> named his first novel\, <em>The Last Grand To
 ur</em>\, one of its Best Indie Books of the Year and the Association of U
 niversity Publishers put his biography <em>Pure Act: The Uncommon Life of 
 Robert Lax</em> on its top-ten list in American Literature. His latest boo
 k is the memoir <em>An Island to Myself: The Place of Solitude in an Activ
 e Life</em>. An award-winning professor of creative writing\, McGregor has
  written about writing for <em>Poets &amp\; Writers</em> and <em>The Write
 r's Chronicle</em> and given writing workshops and presentations across th
 e country.</p>\n<p>This event is part of Novel Day. Novel Day is a celebra
 tion of the craft of writing novels\, featuring workshops and panels prese
 nted by some of the most beloved novelists in our region. Writers at all s
 tages of their writing lives\, newbies and published writers alike\, are w
