What makes a space into a place? \;Dee p mapping \;is a multidisciplinary approach to exploring the layers th at give a place meaning. A deep map might include maps and databases along side photography\, writing\, painting\, archival materials\, interviews\, or site-specific work. Rather than simply documenting a place\, deep mappi ng asks us to look closely at the histories\, stories\, memories\, people\ , and experiences that shape it.

Over six weeks\, participan
ts will explore Maplewood through a creative practice that brings together
community\, geography\, history\, memory\, research\, and personal experi
ence. Working both individually and collaboratively\, participants will co
ntribute different perspectives and forms of knowledge to a shared deep ma
p of Maplewood&mdash\;one that reflects both the town&rsquo\;s history and
the community as it exists today.
The workshop meets for 1.5 hour s each Wednesday\, \;October 7&ndash\;November 11*\, with work from th e workshop culminating in a gallery exhibition in early December.
\nOpen to ages 13&ndash\;113. No previous art\, mapping\, or research experi ence is required. Attending all sessions is not required but h ighly encouraged as this is a collaborative project.

Alex Steinberg is a curriculum and i
nstruction specialist\, educator\, and digital practitioner whose work exp
lores the intersection of technology\, learning\, and creative practice. H
e has taught history\, webdesign\, technology and society\, AI literacy\,
and designed curriculum in K&ndash\;12 education\, with a particular inter
est in digital mapping\, spatial storytelling\, and the ways technology ca
n change how we understand and represent the world. He has previously lead
deep mapping workshops for students and has explored projects using ArcGI
S to explore local history\, demographic change\, and place. He is current
ly exploring &ldquo\;deep mapping&rdquo\; as a creative practice that brin
gs together community\, geography\, history\, memory\, research\, and pers
onal experience.
