\nCreate your own gift ba
sket! Learn about coiling\, one of the oldest known textile construction m
ethods\, practised in basket-making traditions among indigenous Canadian m
akers and cultures in Africa\, North America\, Asia\, and beyond. \; <
br /> \;
Using provided and upcycled materials including fabric s
trips\, repurposed yarn\, cord\, and textile offcuts\, participants will l
earn the coiling technique by constructing a small coiled basket or flat r
ug. \;
\;
Coiling requires no loom\, no machinery\, an
d no cutting beyond basic preparation. The materials are deliberately sour
ced from what already exists\, making this workshop an exploration of sust
ainability and resourcefulness alongside craft skill. The rhythmic\, repet
itive nature of coiling makes it especially well-suited to intergeneration
al groups: accessible and meditative\, with forms that can be as simple or
as complex as each participant's comfort allows. \;
\;
Participants are encouraged to bring any fabric scraps or yarn they wish
to incorporate into their own piece. Open to all ages\, no experience is
needed. Registration required.
