college in 1825\, Nathaniel Hawthorne&mdash\; one of America's greatest st
orytellers -- returned home to Salem\, Massachusetts\, where he lived with
his mother and sisters for most of the next two decades\, honing his craf
t in his third-story bedroom. During that time\, he kept a series of journ
als\, now called the&nbsp\;American Notebooks\, that became a vital taproo
t for his stories and novels. They also served as a laboratory where Hawth
orne could experiment with fictional ideas and premises\, letting his extr
aordinary imagination play with intriguing\, sometimes wild possibilities.
</p>\n<p>Explore some of his oddest\, boldest\, and most secretive writing
&mdash\; the microfictions sprinkled throughout these notebooks\, none mo
re than a paragraph long\, and many just a single sentence. Led by acclaim

  new book\,&nbsp\;<em>Nathaniel Hawthorne: Parables\, Fantasies\, Fragment
s</em>. An accomplished author\, he serves as a Distinguished University P
