X-ALT-DESC;FMTTYPE=text/html:<p>Long-time SAS member Kim Thorburn will add
ress the little understood use by shorebirds of shrub-steppe in eastern Wa
shington&rsquo\;s Columbia Basin and the urgent need for increased researc
h and recognition of this landscape to shorebird survival.</p>\n<p>Thorbur
n will cover how shorebird populations throughout the world are in steep d
ecline. With breeding grounds in the far north and some of the longest mig
ratory movements of all birds\, shorebirds face many threats and are chall
enging to study. A well identified threat is habitat destruction by shorel
ine development\, and much conservation effort is directed toward protecti
ng and preserving those habitats. The birds&rsquo\; use of shrubsteppe for
both migration and breeding is less systematically understood.</p>\n<p>Th
orburn has long been a SAS leader in shrub-steppe conservation\, but she h
as been smitten with shorebirds since early childhood\, chasing Sanderling
s out with the surf and back in with the waves at the southern California
beach near her grandparents&rsquo\; home.</p>\n<p>By attending library pro
grams\, you are agreeing to potentially appear in photos/videos taken at o
