Zines have a long history as tools for ind ependent publishing\, political education\, counter-cultural ideas\, and n iche interests. In this workshop\, we will explore the political origins o f zines\, spanning from the Harlem Renaissance to present day. Participant s will learn essential techniques for creating zines\, DIY distribution me thods\, and will have the opportunity to make their very own 8-page punk z ine using just a single sheet of paper by the end of the session. No prior experience is required\, and all materials will be provided. Presented in partnership with \;Hamilton Zineposium.
\nThis workshop is facilitated by Nala Ismacil (they/them)\, a Somali working-class artist and zinester living wi th their cat\, Luna\, in Onon:takon/Hamilton. After their introduction to Osa Atoe&rsquo\;s \;Shotgun Seamstress \;through Toronto's punk sc ene\, Nala developed an interest in diy publishing that has \;spanned a decade. Their most recent zines include \;Bulldagger Blues \;and \;An Introduction to Field Recording. Nala hopes to keep this anti-ca pitalist tradition alive by sharing this medium with artists and organizer s alike. They will never stop making zines.
