The Emmet O'Neal Library\, in partnership with the Jefferson County Memorial Project\, will offer a series of book d iscussions centered around the themes developed by the Project. \;&nbs p\;
\nOur first discussion on November 6 will cover Bryan Stevenson' s Just Mercy.
\nBryan Stevenson grew up a member of a poor black com munity in the racially segregated South. He was a young lawyer when he fou nded the Equal Justice Initiative\, a legal practice dedicated to defendin g those most desperate and in need: the poor\, the wrongly condemned\, and women and children trapped in the farthest reaches of the US&rsquo\;s cri minal justice system. One of his first cases was that of Walter McMillian\ , a young black man who was sentenced to die for a notorious murder he ins isted he didn&rsquo\;t commit. The case drew Bryan into a tangle of conspi racy\, political machination\, startling racial inequality\, and legal bri nksmanship &mdash\; and transformed his understanding of mercy and justice forever.
